WHISKY bottlers at the world’s largest plant raised a glass yesterday as they bottled up and waved goodbye to their 400 millionth case.

Opened in 1979, the Diageo bottling plant in Shieldhall sent off the special case of Buchanan’s Deluxe whisky to its lucky new owners in Brazil complete with a certificate and a request to get back in touch with them.

The Diageo plant – the world’s largest Scotch whisky packaging plant – ships the hard stuff to 180 countries, including China, Russia and Brazil.

Given the recent growth in demand for Scotch whisky, the Diageo bosses have been recording their highest sales figures and are on track to celebrate their 500 millionth case by 2015.

Shieldhall site director Colin Neill said: "It was very fitting that it was a case of Buchanan’s Deluxe which is destined for Brazil, one of our major growth markets, which took us through the 400 million case milestone. I’m very proud indeed of all our people."

The Brazilians who receive Diageo’s 400 millionth case will also get a certificate and a special Quaich of Scottish Friendship, asking them to contact the Scots producers.
